Sandy History
Sandy was originally settled in the 1860's, by pioneers spreading out from Salt Lake City into the rest of the valley to find less crowded land. Its name comes from the type of soil found in the area, which made growing crops very difficult even with the water provided by the nearby Jordan river.
Silver was found in the nearby Little Cottonwood Canyon and Sandy became a thiving trading post and supply station for the mines. Part of this expansion included the building of 3 smelters, with the ore being transported to Salt Lake City via a railroad that was built in 1873.
Today Sandy is the 4th largest city in Utah.
